What it took to see atoms
A bitesize look at the history of electron microscopy.
My name is Wes, and I’m an incoming Ph.D. Student at the University of Iowa where I will investigate the early Martian crust using data from the Perseverance Rover. I am broadly interested in combining planetary science and geochemistry to address big-picture questions about the geological history and potential for life on other planets.
Currently, I work as a student research assistant in the Geosciences department at UT Dallas, where I conduct research on meteorites and terrestrial samples. My work primarily utilizes X-ray Diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy techniques. I have completed primary research on micrometeorites, deep-ocean manganese nodules, and surficial oxide precipitates in Permian sandstones.
Prior to attending UT Dallas for my bachelor's degree, I earned an associate's degree in biology from San Antonio College. In 2022, I founded the Astrobiology Society of America, a student organization dedicated to advancing discussion, education, and research in astrobiology and related disciplines.
